Getting Around Tiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai is a relatively small town, but the main points of interest—the Arunachaleswarar Temple, Sri Ramanasramam, and the bus stands—are spread out along a few main roads. Getting around is easy once you understand the local system.

1. Share-Autos (The Local Lifeline)

The most common and cheapest way to get around is the "share-auto" system. These are larger yellow auto-rickshaws that run on fixed routes, picking up and dropping off multiple passengers along the way.

• The Main Route: The most important route for visitors runs from the Main Bus Stand → past the Arunachaleswarar Temple → past Sri Ramanasramam → ending at Ramana Nagar / Chengam Road.
• Cost: It usually costs just ₹10 to ₹20 per seat, depending on the distance.
• How to use: Just stand on the side of the road, wave down a passing share-auto, and ask "Ashram?" or "Temple?". You pay the driver when you get out.

2. Private Auto-Rickshaws

If you prefer not to share, you can hire a standard auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) for a private ride.

• No Meters: Autos in Tiruvannamalai do not use meters. You must negotiate and agree on the fare before getting in.
• Standard Fares: A private trip from Ramana Ashram to the main Temple usually costs between ₹60 and ₹100. From the Bus Stand to the Ashram is roughly ₹80 to ₹120. (Prices spike heavily during Pournami or festivals).

3. Walking (The Best Way to Experience the Town)

Walking is often the best way to experience the energy of Tiruvannamalai, provided you avoid the midday sun.

4. App-Based Taxis (Ola/Uber)

As of now, services like Ola and Uber are not reliably available in Tiruvannamalai for local point-to-point drops. However, you can use apps like RedTaxi or FastTrack to book intercity cabs (e.g., to Chennai Airport), but for local town travel, you must rely on the local autos.
