Mount Arunachala is honeycombed with natural caves where sages have meditated for centuries. Today, visitors can trek up the hill to sit in these very same caves, which are heavily charged with spiritual vibrations.
Virupaksha Cave
This is the most famous cave on the hill. It is named after the 13th-century saint Virupaksha Deva, who spent his life here. Sri Ramana Maharshi also lived and meditated in this cave from 1899 to 1916. The cave is unique because its interior is shaped like the sacred syllable "OM". When you sit inside, the natural acoustics and deep silence pull the mind inward effortlessly.
Skandasramam
Located further up the hill from Virupaksha, Skandasramam is a beautiful, shaded ashram-cave where Ramana Maharshi lived from 1916 to 1922. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the great Arunachaleswarar Temple below. The cool breeze, ancient trees, and lingering presence of the sage make it an ideal spot for deep contemplation.
How to Reach the Caves
- The Trek: The trail begins behind the Ramana Ashram. It takes about 20-30 minutes to hike up to Skandasramam, and another 10 minutes down to Virupaksha Cave.
- Timings: It is best to hike early in the morning (around 7 AM) or late afternoon (around 4 PM) to avoid the intense midday sun.
- Etiquette: Absolute silence is mandatory inside the caves. Leave your shoes outside and sit quietly.
