Walking the 14km path around the sacred Arunachala hill (Girivalam) is a powerful spiritual practice. While it can be done on any day, doing it on Pournami (Full Moon) is considered highly auspicious. However, it also means sharing the path with anywhere from 1 to 3 million other devotees.
If it is your first time attempting Pournami Girivalam, preparation is key. Here is how to navigate the massive crowds safely and have a deeply fulfilling experience.
1. The Best Time to Start Walking
Timing is everything on Pournami. The exact time the full moon begins and ends (the tithi) changes every month, but the crowds follow predictable patterns:
- The Peak Rush (Avoid if possible): Starting between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM on the evening of Pournami means you will be walking shoulder-to-shoulder in a very slow-moving sea of people.
- The Early Morning Start (Highly Recommended): Starting at 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM on the day of (or the day after) Pournami is much more peaceful. The weather is cool, the crowds are thinner, and watching the sunrise over Arunachala is magical.
- The Late Night Walk: Starting around 11:00 PM or Midnight. The initial crowds have spread out, and the night air is cool.
2. Essential Packing & Preparation
- Travel Light: Do not carry heavy backpacks. A small sling bag with your phone, some cash, and a water bottle is enough.
- Hydration: While there are thousands of stalls distributing free water and buttermilk (Annadanam), it is safest to carry one reusable water bottle.
- Clothing: Wear light, breathable cotton clothes. Even at night, walking in a crowd can get very warm.
- Footwear: Traditional Girivalam is done barefoot. If your feet are sensitive, wear very comfortable, worn-in walking sandals. (Avoid new shoes that might cause blisters).
3. Navigating the Crowds & Safety
The Pournami crowd is generally very peaceful and deeply devotional, constantly chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or "Arunachala Shiva." However, simple precautions are necessary:
- Stay on the Left: Always walk on the left side of the road. Let faster walkers pass on your right.
- Keep Valuables Safe: Keep your mobile phone and cash in a secure front pocket or cross-body bag. Pickpocketing can happen in extremely dense areas near the temple entrances.
- Group Travel: If walking with elderly family members or children, hold hands in dense areas. Decide on a meeting point (like a specific Lingam or ashram) in case you get separated, as mobile networks often jam during Pournami due to overload.
4. Annadanam (Free Food)
One of the most beautiful aspects of Pournami Girivalam is the massive scale of Annadanam. Hundreds of organizations set up stalls along the entire 14km route offering free food, water, tea, and medical aid. You will not go hungry. However, please dispose of your paper plates and cups in designated bins to keep the sacred path clean.
