The 14-kilometer Girivalam path around Arunachala Hill is dotted with numerous shrines, ashrams, and sacred tanks. However, the most important landmarks on this route are the Ashta Lingams (Eight Lingams).
These eight lingams are naturally positioned at the eight cardinal and intercardinal directions around the hill. According to legend, they were installed by the respective deities of those directions to worship Lord Arunachaleswarar.
The Ashta Lingams on the Route
1. Indra Lingam (East)
The first lingam on the route, located near the main temple's eastern tower. Associated with Lord Indra (King of Devas), worshipping here is believed to bring long life and prosperity.
2. Agni Lingam (South-East)
Located near the Chengam road junction (near Ramana Ashram). Associated with Lord Agni (Fire). Worshipping here helps remove diseases and fear.
3. Yama Lingam (South)
Associated with Lord Yama (God of Death). It is located beside a large sacred tank (Simha Theertham). Worshipping here is said to grant longevity and freedom from the fear of death.
4. Niruthi Lingam (South-West)
Associated with the deity Niruthi. This lingam is situated in a highly peaceful area further down the path. Worshipping here is believed to relieve devotees of their problems and grant peace of mind.
5. Varuna Lingam (West)
Associated with Lord Varuna (God of Water). Worshipping this lingam is said to protect against illness and elevate one's social standing.
6. Vayu Lingam (North-West)
Associated with Lord Vayu (God of Wind). You will feel a distinct, cool breeze in this specific area of the path. Worshipping here grants relief from respiratory issues and brings good news.
7. Kubera Lingam (North)
Associated with Lord Kubera (God of Wealth). This is one of the most crowded lingams on the path, as devotees flock here to pray for financial success, wealth, and prosperity.
8. Isanya Lingam (North-East)
The final lingam on the route, associated with Lord Shiva himself in the form of Isanya. It is located near the town's cremation ground. Worshipping here grants absolute peace and spiritual liberation.
Walking the Route
The entire path is paved and well-lit. You simply follow the crowds and keep the Arunachala Hill on your right-hand side at all times. Most pilgrims begin their journey at the Eastern Tower (Rajagopuram) of the main temple, visit the Indra Lingam, and then proceed clockwise around the mountain.
