Tiruvannamalai attracts thousands of international spiritual seekers every year, particularly those drawn to Sri Ramanasramam and the teachings of Advaita Vedanta. While the town is very accustomed to foreign visitors, India can still be a cultural adjustment. This guide covers the essentials for a smooth stay.
1. Visa and C-Form Registration
Indian law requires all foreign nationals to be registered via a 'C-Form' within 24 hours of arrival.
- Hotels & Guesthouses: If you stay at a registered hotel or guesthouse, the management will handle the C-Form registration for you. They will need your physical passport and visa.
- Renting Private Houses: If you are renting a house long-term directly from an owner, ensure the owner completes your C-Form. Failing to do so can cause serious issues when trying to leave the country or extend a visa.
2. Cultural Etiquette & Dress Code
Tiruvannamalai is a deeply conservative, traditional temple town. Respecting the local dress code is paramount, both in the ashrams and on the streets.
- For Women: Shoulders, chest, and knees must be covered. Salwar kameez, kurtas with loose pants, or long skirts are ideal. Avoid tight leggings without a long top covering the hips.
- For Men: Long pants or traditional dhotis/lungis are preferred. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are not allowed inside the main temple or ashrams.
- Public Affection: Public displays of affection (hugging, kissing) should be avoided.
3. Money and Currency Exchange
While digital payments (UPI) dominate India now, as a foreigner without an Indian bank account, cash will be your primary method of payment.
- ATMs: There are several ATMs near the Ramana Ashram area. However, they sometimes run out of cash during busy festival times. Withdraw sufficient cash when you can.
- Currency Exchange: There are authorized money changers near the ashram and the main temple. Compare rates at a few places before exchanging large amounts.
4. SIM Cards and Internet
Getting an Indian SIM card makes travel infinitely easier (allowing you to use Uber/Ola apps if available, Google Maps, and local WhatsApp numbers).
- Buying a SIM: You can purchase a Jio or Airtel SIM card at mobile shops near the ashram. You will need your passport, visa copy, and a passport-sized photo. Activation usually takes 12-24 hours for foreigners.
- WiFi: Most cafes and guesthouses around the ashram area offer free WiFi. Power cuts do happen, so a local SIM with a 4G/5G data pack is a good backup.
5. Health and Safety
Tiruvannamalai is generally very safe. The biggest risks are usually stomach bugs and the sun.
- Water: Never drink tap water. Always drink bottled, sealed mineral water or filtered RO water provided by reputable guesthouses.
- Food: Stick to busy restaurants where food turnover is high. Avoid raw salads or pre-peeled fruits from street vendors initially until your stomach adjusts.
- Touts & Beggars: You will encounter beggars, especially near the temple and ashram. If you wish to give, small change is fine, but it is often better to donate directly to local charities or Annadanam (free food) programs.
