Visiting the Arunachaleswarar Temple

The Arunachaleswarar Temple (also known as Annamalaiyar Temple) in Tiruvannamalai is one of the most significant Shaivite temples in the world. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, representing the element of Fire (Agni). Located at the base of the Arunachala hill, this sprawling 25-acre complex is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture.

The temple is renowned for its massive gopurams (gateway towers). The eastern tower, the Rajagopuram, is one of the tallest in India, standing at 217 feet (66 meters) with 11 stories. As you walk through the complex, you will pass through five concentric courtyards (prakarams), each featuring stunning mandapams (pillared halls), smaller shrines, and sacred tanks.

• Free vs. Special Darshan: There is a free queue (Dharma Darshan) which can take several hours on busy days. You can also purchase Special Darshan tickets (usually ₹50 or ₹200 depending on the queue length) to expedite your entry.
• Dress Code: Traditional Indian wear is required. Men should wear dhoti or formal pants (no shorts). Women should wear sarees, half-sarees, or churidars with a dupatta.
• Leave Electronics Behind: Mobile phones and cameras are generally not permitted inside the inner sanctum. It is best to leave them in your hotel room.
