If you only have a weekend to spend in the holy town of Tiruvannamalai, you need a plan that balances the physical effort of Girivalam, the deep silence of the ashrams, and the grandeur of the main temple. Here is our recommended 48-hour itinerary.
Day 1: The Temple and The Ashram
Morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Arunachaleswarar Temple
Start your day early to beat the heat and the crowds. Enter through the main Rajagopuram. Take your time walking through the massive courtyards, admiring the Thousand Pillared Hall, and joining the queue for Darshan in the inner sanctum. Don't forget to visit the Pathala Lingam where Sri Ramana Maharshi meditated.
Late Morning (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM): Sri Ramanasramam
Take an auto to Sri Ramana Ashram. Spend this time sitting silently in the Old Hall or near the Samadhi shrine. The energy here is profoundly still. If you wish, you can partake in the free Annadanam (lunch) served at 11:30 AM.
Afternoon (1:00 PM - 4:00 PM): Rest & Reflect
Tiruvannamalai afternoons can be hot. Head back to your room, rest, take a shower, and prepare for the evening.
Evening (4:30 PM - 7:00 PM): Skandashram Trek
Return to Ramana Ashram and take the path leading up the Arunachala hill. A 30-40 minute trek will bring you to Skandashram, a cave where Ramana Maharshi lived for several years. The panoramic view of the giant temple from up here during sunset is breathtaking.
Day 2: The Sacred Circumambulation (Girivalam)
Early Morning (4:30 AM - 9:00 AM): Girivalam
Wake up very early. Begin your 14-kilometer barefoot walk around the Arunachala hill. Starting at 4:30 AM ensures you complete the walk before the sun becomes too intense. Stop at the Ashta Lingams along the way.
Late Morning (9:30 AM - 12:00 PM): Breakfast and Recovery
After completing Girivalam, you will be exhausted but spiritually energized. Head to a local cafe (like The Dreaming Tree or a local dosa hotel) for a heavy, well-deserved breakfast. Return to your room to shower and pack.
Afternoon: Departure
Check out of your room and begin your journey home, carrying the peace of Arunachala with you.
