While Tiruvannamalai rewards slow travel, many visitors only have a single day to spare, often driving down from Chennai (4 hours) or Bangalore (4.5 hours). If you only have 24 hours, you need a tight plan to see the main sights without exhausting yourself.

Here is the most efficient and fulfilling way to spend one day in Tiruvannamalai.

Morning: The Great Temple

6:00 AM - 9:00 AM: Arunachaleswarar Temple

Start your day as early as possible. The Arunachaleswarar Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva as the element of fire) is massive, spanning 25 acres. Arriving at 6:00 AM allows you to beat the intense midday heat and the large crowds.

Enter through the Eastern Rajagopuram (the main tower). Take your time walking through the courtyards, visiting the thousand-pillar hall, and finally taking Darshan at the inner sanctum. Don't rush; the architecture and energy here are profound.

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Traditional Breakfast

Exit the temple and head to any of the nearby "Bhavans" for a classic South Indian breakfast of hot idlis, crispy vada, pongal, and strong filter coffee.

Midday: Peace at the Ashram

10:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Sri Ramanasramam

Take an auto-rickshaw (about ₹80) down Chengam Road to Sri Ramanasramam. This is the ashram of the great 20th-century sage, Ramana Maharshi. The contrast between the bustling main temple and the utter silence of this ashram is striking.

Spend time sitting quietly in the Old Hall or by the Samadhi shrine. If you have the stamina, take the 30-minute hike up the hill behind the ashram to Skandashram, the cave where the Maharshi lived for many years. The panoramic view of the main temple from here is the best in the city.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Lunch and Rest

Grab lunch at one of the cafes in Ramana Nagar (near the ashram). It is highly recommended to rest indoors during the peak afternoon heat (1 PM to 4 PM).

Late Afternoon/Evening: The Sacred Walk

4:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Girivalam (The Circumambulation)

As the sun begins to set, it is time for Girivalam—the 14km walk around the base of Mount Arunachala. Start from the ashram and walk clockwise. The path is dotted with eight main Shiva Lingams (Ashta Lingams), numerous smaller shrines, and ashrams.

Walking the full 14km takes about 3 to 4 hours at a normal pace. Watching the mountain change colors as the sun sets and the stars come out is an unforgettable end to your day trip.

If you finish the walk by 8:30 PM, you have time for a quick dinner before beginning the drive back to Chennai or Bangalore.

Decided to Stay the Night?

A day trip is exhausting. We highly recommend booking a room just for a quick shower and a safe place to rest before driving back.
